Movin' On Up

Hi Reader,

Man, it's been a minute since my last missive and A LOT has happened.

Firstly, I sold mom's house. Yay!

We had a buyer who dragged their feet and, even with a $5K credit, backed out right before signing on the dotted line.

Of course, I was miffed and a bit worried. But, we immediately held another open house and got an even better bid the very next day.

These buyers are motivated, accommodating, and happen to be a lovely family who are happy for us to leave any furniture we don't want to take or sell, which is a real bonus.

Secondly, I saw an apartment I wanted to buy before I put the house up for sale, but quickly realized it was beyond our budget. Not gonna lie, I was low-key crushed.

Fast forward a few weeks and they drop the price 50K, but I'm still not ready because our initial buyer fell through.

A couple of weeks later, the price drops another 50K and now I've got a buyer but it's still a bit risky as they need to secure their mortgage. I wait until I fear the condo is going to be pulled from the market and offer 50K less than current asking, and the seller immediately accepts.

Here are the lessons/reminders in all this:

  1. You can only control what you can control
It's easy to get upset or frustrated when things don't go the way you hope, plan, or want, but that doesn't mean things aren't going to work out in the end. Put a strategy in place for the what-ifs and don't be afraid to improvise. You might be surprised that what happens is even better than you expected.
  2. Sometimes no action is the right action
We live in a society and a culture that encourages us to move swiftly and boldly or risk missing out. But, some decisions require deliberation and the smarter strategy is to take your time and wait for the right moment to make your move.
  3. The right people make all the difference
Through all the ups and downs, I have had partners (2 realtors and a lawyer) helping me strategize, plan, and pivot as needed. I wouldn't be here without their wisdom and guidance. Choose wisely and don't skimp on investing in the support you need to make the right things happen.

Finally, earlier this week I moved out of my apartment of 20 years.

The whole sorting, purging, and packing experience was humbling but a great reminder that we often don't realize how much literal and emotional stuff is taking up space without contributing positively to our quality of life.

Letting go is freeing!

Until next time...stay cool and stay true to you.

I thought I had a professional business plan in place but I could not have been more wrong. I was missing things like smart goals, market analysis, and the proper way to attract customers and describe my services.

I've taken a lot of classes, but nothing stuck like the information I received from Lauren. She taught me how to be strategic and focus on my long-term goals, and the value is priceless!

Title: 'Tis Our Time to Shine; Subtitle: In the era of consumer protests

Hi Reader, Right now, there's a consumer 'blackout' movement afoot to, basically, stop buying stuff for the entirety of the Black Friday weekend from corporations. This isn't just happening in the USA, but also in Canada, as a way to protest the current economic climate and policies that are making the wealthy wealthier and squeezing every penny out of the rest of us. Don't forget, there's still active consumer protests against Target, Home Depot, and Amazon, among others, as well. In other...

Title: Head for the Exit; Subtitle: To drive your business growth

Hi Reader, When I teach business growth classes one of the first sessions includes a discussion about Exit Strategies. What most entrepreneurs fail to realize is that how they plan to end their relationship with their business is perhaps even more important than how they start it. Exit strategies are a critical aspect of any business growth plan because the way in which you leave your business shapes key activities, priorities, and decisions all along your path. Some common business exit...

Title: Happy Anniversary to Me; Subtitle: Find your gift inside

In all the hubbub of my crazy summer something pretty major happened that I completely ignored: My business turned 15. No celebratory notes or announcements. No cards or flowers. No social media posts. Not really even a second thought until weeks later when I casually mentioned it to a friend and they were amazed and said, "Let's celebrate." But, I didn't feel like celebrating. Or, more exactly, I didn't feel I had the time to celebrate. I was moving into my new apartment, getting my mom...
