It's a Juggling Act

I'm halfway through teaching another women's start-up course for NYC's Small Business Services Department and one of the biggest topics of conversations we've had is how to keep the momentum going once class ends.

This isn't just something students struggle with.

Every entrepreneur I know, including me, wrestles with keeping things growing while keeping their business going.

Here are some of the strategies I use and/or recommend to hack your schedule and to-do lists:

  1. Time Blocking
Divide your day into focused blocks dedicated to specific tasks or types of work.
    • USE YOUR CALENDAR and/or scheduling system to integrate alarms and limit the days or times of day when you're available for meetings, networking, or email responses.
    • TURN OFF ALERTS for news, social media, and other distractions and interruptions.
    • LIMIT THE NUMBER OF ACTIVITIES that require deep focus or high energy each day. Maximize your high energy and focus time to power through your toughest to-dos.
Check out Time Out of Mind if you struggle with time management due to neurodiversity.
  2. Employ a Productivity Hack
These help you prioritize and organize your to-do list and ensure you keep crossing things off it.
    • The EISENHOWER METHOD enables you to prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance so you focus on the most critical to-dos first and delegate or eliminate lesser ones.
    • The "2-MINUTE RULE" encourages you to address small tasks first to keep them from piling up and causing overwhelm or mental roadblocks.
    • The POMODORO TECHNIQUE helps you maintain focus by having you work in blocks of timed sprints with shorter and longer breaks in between.

  3. Partner Up
One of the best ways to ensure you continue to get things done is by entrusting another person to keep you accountable. There are a few ways you can do this:
    • FIND A BUDDY and meet regularly to share your goals, to-dos, and progress.
    • JOIN A GROUP OR MASTERMIND focused on keeping members accountable.
    • WORK WITH A BUSINESS COACH to get personalized, one-on-one strategies, support, motivation and guidance. A good coach will also help you prioritize tasks, create realistic action plans, and understand your work style to suggest the tools and methods best suited for you.
Curious how coaching can help you level up your growth? Let's talk.

No matter the methods or strategies you use, consistency is key.

The fact is, you don't have fewer things to juggle as you grow your business. But with practice, good habits, and the right kind of support, you get significantly better at juggling.

Until next time,

Easily Said & Done

I help entrepreneurs leapfrog over the typical potholes that derail most small businesses with inspiration, motivation, education, and support across a wide range of business topics drawn from over a decade of running my own business, teaching entrepreneurship for the City of New York, and coaching and consulting privately with dozens of women and minority small business owners. Honestly, why go it alone when help is an email away?

Title: Cover You, Cover Me; Subtitle: With the insurance we need.

Hi Reader, Most entrepreneurs don't think about insurance until, they need it, and by then it's too late. I sure didn't. It wasn't until a client asked me if I had it that it even entered my mind. Then, I had to quickly find a policy not really knowing what I was buying so I could confirm, "yeah, I'm covered." The truth is, there are a lot of different types of business insurance and what is right for you depends upon where you are, what you sell, how you sell it, and who you sell it to,...

Title: Spring Break; Subtitle: Let nature be your guide.

Hi Reader, In New York City, spring is struggling to get a foothold with temps barely making it into the 50s, let alone the 60s for more than a day at a time. But the trees, daffodils, and tulips just don't care; they're blooming and it's lovely to see. It's also spring break week for City schools bookended by Passover and Easter and a week out from Eid. For some, this time of year is a reawakening, coming out from the hibernation tendencies of winter into a flurry of activity, spring...

Title: Are You Protected; Subtitle: From growing cyber threats?

Hi Reader, I consider myself a fairly savvy individual when it comes to most things impacting small business owners, but last week I was truly blown away by Jessica Robinson's guest session on cybersecurity for small business owners during one of my current classes. Jessica, CEO of Purepoint Int'l and a cybersecurity expert, is a graduate of the very first business development course I taught for New York City back in 2017, so it was such a joy to welcome her back to my classroom. And, what...
