One or Two Little Words

Have you ever asked someone to describe you in one or two words? What would your clients and/or colleagues say if you did?
Here's why I'm asking, our brains are wired to associate words with things -- that's basically the idea of language, after all. And when two things are repeatedly associated in our minds, then the likelihood of one of those linked thoughts leading to the other increases exponentially over time.
So, when it comes to branding, it's all about that one or two-word association people link to you and no one else.
Here's what I mean. Who comes to mind when you think of:

  • Electric cars?
  • Motivational speaking?
  • Style?
  • Business savvy?
  • Financial security?

Whoever does, owns that space in your brain.
Anyone else looking to establish themselves as the go-to in those areas has to overthrow whoever is occupying that space now, which can be a long, difficult battle to fight.
But, here's the good news: There are plenty of associations that are blank spaces for people, meaning no one, in particular, comes to mind.
Those blank spaces are opportunities to establish and make your branding stick in a way that's pretty priceless.
So, what's the word, idea, or concept you want to own in other people's brains? If someone else is already living there, figure out their weak spots and either take them on or take up residency "next door" using a word or term that speaks to your superior value. Eventually, you'll supplant them in people's minds.
Once you figure out the space you want to occupy, it's that much easier to hone your branding and messaging, because your mission is to drive home that association.
If you're struggling and want some help, simply book some time on my calendar.

Title: An Ounce of Prevention; subtitle: Can really save your bacon

Hi Reader, Last week we had the first tornado warning in Manhattan and the second in New York City that I can recall. There was horrible air quality from the Canadian wildfires as well as torrential rains with their accompanying flood warnings the week before. Right now, Spain and France are suffering devastating wildfires and heat waves. I've written before about disaster preparedness, but I really want to drive home the need to think about and plan for the potential impact of natural or...

Title: When AI Actually Works; Subtitle: It's a transformation tool

I promised I'd share some AI wins after bashing on it for the last couple of months, so here goes. An old client of mine runs a wine shop in Brooklyn. She's got some help but she's largely a one-woman show. She's been using Monday's AI features to help her analyze and manage her inventory and understand seasonal sales trends to purchase more smartly. She had to level up her investment and hire someone to help her set up the AI agents she needs but feels it's been money well-spent. Another one...

Title: When the Pope Speaks...; Subtitle: Are the right people listening?

There are lots of thoughts spinning around in my brain at any given moment. Maybe you can relate. We're kind of living in whirlwind times where information is coming at us incessantly; it's like being caught up in a tornado. There's just no way to catch your breath and really marinate on anything for too long. So here are a few things I'm trying to give a little bit more thought and attention to these days: What impact will Pope Leo's AI encyclical have on governments, tech leaders, and...
