I recently saw my nephew, who'll be 10 soon, and offered to teach him how to dive this summer. Between my freshman and sophomore years of college, I was a day camp counselor for a troop of 8-year-old kids, many of whom I taught to swim or dive during our time together. I love swimming and really enjoy helping kids overcome their fears and learn what I believe are necessary life skills in the water. But, honestly, that moment when they get it, and they get that they are actually doing it—it's just the sweetest thing. It's like learning to ride a bicycle. There is joy and freedom and such pure magic in it. My nephew is thinking it over, which is, of course, his prerogative. He loves swimming now, but it took him a while to even get into a pool when he was younger. So, I know he's deliberative by nature. My conversation with him reminded me of one I had recently with a prospective coaching client. She needed time to think things over, which was fine by me. When she finally came back to me and signed on, she said, "Lauren, I really appreciate that you gave me the space I needed to make sure this is the right decision for me." It was a great reminder that not all sales happen in the moment or on my timeline. In fact, sometimes, like in this instance, not making the sale is what makes the sale. Last year, I told a potential client that I wasn't sure I was the right fit for her needs and suggested I connect her with someone I knew who might be more appropriate. She flat-out told me I was wrong. She said, "Actually, I think you're exactly who I need and, more importantly, who I want to work with." The funny thing is, she was dead right. I guess the point of all this is to say, don't get too caught up in trying to make the sale, preparing for those objections, and sweating over the pricing conversation. Focus on showing your prospects who you are and on demonstrating both your value and your vibe. More often than not, the right ones will choose you because, well, there really is no other choice. Until next week, remember, learning new things can be a ton of fun. You just need to find the right teacher. PS - Want some personalized support with your sales strategy? Let's talk. I help entrepreneurs leapfrog over the typical potholes that derail most small businesses with inspiration, motivation, education, and support across a wide range of business topics drawn from over a decade of running my own business, teaching entrepreneurship for the City of New York, and coaching and consulting privately with dozens of women and minority small business owners. Honestly, why go it alone when help is an email away?
Hi Reader, Something I've been enjoying of late are multiple influencers showcasing the limits of ChatGPT and the like. One guy asks it some pretty basic questions, such as to name a number between one and one hundred that includes the letter 'a.' (Spoiler alert: there aren't any). ChatGPT lies to his face over and over again. Another one provides examples of business fails due to AI. Some are pretty extraordinary. But here's the thing, this isn't just a harmless gimmick, it's a warning cry,...
Have you seen the video of McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski trying to promote the new Big Arch burger ahead of its March 3rd launch? How about any of the many, many videos or memes negging on it for a host of reasons, including how Kempczinski refers to the burger as "a delicious product" or his failure to take a real bite of it, seeming almost disgusted by it. To me, there are three great marketing stories going on here. 1. Going Viral Isn't the Goal Yes, there is such a thing as bad PR and...
This fall my mom was diagnosed with mild-to-moderate dementia. While sad, it did not come as a surprise. It's one reason I sold her house and we moved in together late last summer. At first, I planned outings to the Y and other senior programs, scheduled visits from family and friends, coordinated physical therapy appointments, and designed little daily activities to keep her engaged and stimulated. This winter it's gotten harder and harder to get mom out of bed let alone dressed and out the...
