Last week a client picked my brain about how to follow up on a warm introduction she received from a former colleague. She was worried about blowing the opportunity, which is understandable. I assured my client that she was already doing a great job in her sales communications as her instincts were really strong in this area. Then, I suggested we review the language her former colleague used to describe her firm and the reason her connection would be interested in the introduction. This is important as you want to build on the foundation laid by your referral source in a way that is relevant to the other party. Once we walked through the introductory email, I asked my client what she thought was the best response. And, we talked through the language of the email she would send. As a result, my client realized that rather than sending a link to the firm's portfolio, as she initially planned to do, she should offer to walk the connection through that portfolio in a virtual face-to-face. YES! In sales, always ask for what you really want—in this case, it was that meeting—you can always negotiate down from there, but you can't negotiate up. The best thing for me was the look of relief and satisfaction on my client's face. I knew she had this. But, now, she did, too! Is there anything better than realizing you actually know what you're doing? The truth is, like so many small business owners and entrepreneurs, my clients regularly benefit from having a sounding board, an objective opinion, and someone to help map out how to get them where they want to go. It makes a world of difference to their businesses and, even more importantly, to their belief that they can actually be successful entrepreneurs and leaders. That's exactly why I created my Partner-On-Demand services—So no one has to go it alone! And, I'm absolutely jazzed that for the first time ever I'm offering a secret sale to my mailing list for one week only, starting tomorrow. Look for my email with more details coming to your inbox Friday morning. And, if you missed my advice on acquiring valuable real estate in your audience's brains, you can find it here. Your success is our strategy! |
I help entrepreneurs leapfrog over the typical potholes that derail most small businesses with inspiration, motivation, education, and support across a wide range of business topics drawn from over a decade of running my own business, teaching entrepreneurship for the City of New York, and coaching and consulting privately with dozens of women and minority small business owners. Honestly, why go it alone when help is an email away?
Hi Reader, Last week we had the first tornado warning in Manhattan and the second in New York City that I can recall. There was horrible air quality from the Canadian wildfires as well as torrential rains with their accompanying flood warnings the week before. Right now, Spain and France are suffering devastating wildfires and heat waves. I've written before about disaster preparedness, but I really want to drive home the need to think about and plan for the potential impact of natural or...
I promised I'd share some AI wins after bashing on it for the last couple of months, so here goes. An old client of mine runs a wine shop in Brooklyn. She's got some help but she's largely a one-woman show. She's been using Monday's AI features to help her analyze and manage her inventory and understand seasonal sales trends to purchase more smartly. She had to level up her investment and hire someone to help her set up the AI agents she needs but feels it's been money well-spent. Another one...
There are lots of thoughts spinning around in my brain at any given moment. Maybe you can relate. We're kind of living in whirlwind times where information is coming at us incessantly; it's like being caught up in a tornado. There's just no way to catch your breath and really marinate on anything for too long. So here are a few things I'm trying to give a little bit more thought and attention to these days: What impact will Pope Leo's AI encyclical have on governments, tech leaders, and...
