As someone who has a Masters in Writing, specifically poetry, I'm no stranger to the ancient Chinese philosopher and author of the Tao Te Ching, known in the West as Lao Tzu. But even without a degree or interest in poetry, you're probably familiar with his work, too. This week, in a rare moment of down-time, these quotes from Lao Tzu came across my social media feed and for a multitude of reasons—some personal, some professional—they just hit different. So I thought I'd share them with you because they're chock full of wisdom, advice, and just deep thoughts to ponder as they relate to life and, well, business, too. Watch your thoughts they become your words.
Watch your words, they become your actions.
Watch your actions, they become your habits.
Watch your habits, they become your character.
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. Time is a created thing. To say, “I don’t have time,” is like saying, “I don’t want to.” Stop leaving and you will arrive.
Stop searching and you will see.
Stop running away and you will be found.
Close your mouth.
Block off your senses.
Blunt your sharpness.
Untie your knots.
Soften your glare.
Settle your dust.
This is the primal identity.
Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them. That only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. Do you have the patience to wait till the mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself?
