By now, it's no secret that I'm a caregiver for my mom. That gig used to be pretty part-time until wham-bam it suddenly became more full on two weeks ago. What this means is that I've had to quickly shift gears, change plans, and pivot my focus and priorities. Some of what this requires of me is—I'm not gonna lie—really hard. Some is less so. But here's the thing: When you have all the time in the world, everything takes longer. When you have split seconds, it's amazing how quickly you decide and move forward. As someone who helps other entrepreneurs plan, prioritize, and progress with their growth and development, I'm intimately familiar with all the ways we humans avoid, delay, and distract ourselves from making vital decisions—especially ones that we think are 'make or break.' What if we're wrong? What if it costs us money, time, our pride, or something else? What if, worst of all, it makes no difference whatsoever and we wasted all that energy and anguish?! In these Yoda-like weeks for me of, "Do or do not. There is no try," there is no room for what-ifs, no space for prevarication. I must decide what to do or not do immediately and keep implementing, adapting, and preparing for what's next. Caregiving, like entrepreneurship, is a learn-on-the-job kind of thing. Even as prepared as you may believe yourself to be for what the job requires and asks of you, it's different in practice than in theory. It's one reason why not everyone is cut out to be their own boss, let alone the head of a thriving enterprise. If you're stuck in neutral on a particular aspect of your business development or growth there are a couple of things you can try to shift yourself into drive (or reverse, as the case may be).
While in some ways, this week blew up a lot of the plans I had for the next few weeks, it also catapulted me into high velocity, hyper-focused action, which, if I'm being honest, is a welcome change of pace. And while I would not wish this situation on anyone else, there's something refreshing about simply having no time to doubt myself, think twice, or dither over possibilities, probabilities, and alternatives. If you're feeling stuck and would like my trusted feedback and guidance to get moving, I'd welcome the opportunity to support you! Schedule a laser coaching session with me today. Until next time, PS - Last week I assured you, with the right processes in place, You Can Count On Me & others. Sharing is caring. Please pass this message on. I help entrepreneurs leapfrog over the typical potholes that derail most small businesses with inspiration, motivation, education, and support across a wide range of business topics drawn from over a decade of running my own business, teaching entrepreneurship for the City of New York, and coaching and consulting privately with dozens of women and minority small business owners. Honestly, why go it alone when help is an email away?
Hi Reader, Last week we had the first tornado warning in Manhattan and the second in New York City that I can recall. There was horrible air quality from the Canadian wildfires as well as torrential rains with their accompanying flood warnings the week before. Right now, Spain and France are suffering devastating wildfires and heat waves. I've written before about disaster preparedness, but I really want to drive home the need to think about and plan for the potential impact of natural or...
I promised I'd share some AI wins after bashing on it for the last couple of months, so here goes. An old client of mine runs a wine shop in Brooklyn. She's got some help but she's largely a one-woman show. She's been using Monday's AI features to help her analyze and manage her inventory and understand seasonal sales trends to purchase more smartly. She had to level up her investment and hire someone to help her set up the AI agents she needs but feels it's been money well-spent. Another one...
There are lots of thoughts spinning around in my brain at any given moment. Maybe you can relate. We're kind of living in whirlwind times where information is coming at us incessantly; it's like being caught up in a tornado. There's just no way to catch your breath and really marinate on anything for too long. So here are a few things I'm trying to give a little bit more thought and attention to these days: What impact will Pope Leo's AI encyclical have on governments, tech leaders, and...
